Lesson Introduction:
As students enter the classroom, a political cartoon will be displayed on the LCD projector depicting a Japanese person handing out dynamite to Japanese-Americans with the headline saying “waiting for the signal from home”. The teacher and students together will complete the 6 C’S of primary source analysis worksheet to demonstrate to them how to read primary source analysis and complete the worksheet.

The word wall on a bulletin board is updated daily with words used in lesson plans and is discussed with students to ensure students understand the meaning of the word. The vocabulary is checked on a bi-weekly basis by having students take quizzes.

Content Delivery:
Students will be placed into groups of four and will be handed primary source documents of specific military, political or diplomatic leaders. Students will work together to read or decipher message and answer questions on the primary source analysis worksheet.

Student Engagement:
Students will work cooperatively with a group of their peers to decipher the message of the primary sources given to them. Once this is completed, they must then complete the primary source analysis sheet, present their finding to the entire class, defend their answers, and respond to the any questions the class or teacher may have.

During the opening the teacher can select students who seem of task to guide back and ask students probing questions to check for understanding. During the group the teacher will monitor students progress and assist group who need additional help and answer any question students might have regarding assignment.

Accommodations for English Learners, Struggling Readers and Students with Special Needs
What Came After…
The vocabulary quiz will be orally given to the class and students with specific needs will have the definitions written down on a paper provided by the teacher. English learners will be placed in groups that have bilingual students to help with any inquires when the teacher is unavailable. Lastly, primary sources will include images that do not require reading.
