Goals and objectives:
Goal- Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the reasons for empire building prior to the start of World War II by creating a graphic organizer..
Objective- Students will be able to compare and contrast the different drives for empire in the 1930's by Germany, Italy, Japan and understand the consequences of each countries actions such as the Rape of Nanking and the Stalin-Hitler Pact of 1939.

Lesson Introduction:
The teacher will have the standard that will be covered written on the board. Once brass tasks have been taken care of, writing in their agenda, taking role, student will take out a piece of paper and brainstorm ideas about the need to create an empire. Teacher will demonstrate by writing “nationalism” as a reason for empire. Then, student will work by individually for one minute, then they will talk with their partner for another minute and as a class, we fill write down the ideas on a paper projected on the LCD projector.
Vocabulary (Content Language Development)
Important words or phrases such as “nationalism” will be placed on the word wall on the bulletin board; words will be increased as unit progress. Both teacher and students can add to the wall as long as words are important to the current unit content.
Content Delivery
Teacher will lecture on the specific reason certain countries decided to expand their nation’s borders and the results of their actions. The teacher will use a prezi presentation, which will include pictures, and political cartoons. After viewing the pictures or political cartoons, students will be asked progress-monitoring questions to check for understanding. Students can write down anything they feel will be useful for the group activity to follow.
Student Engagement and Critical Thinking
Once Lecture is completed, students will be broken up into groups of no more than four and they will collectively create a graphic organizer as to the reasons these countries decided to expand their borders.

Demonstrated Learning (formative and summative assessment)
As a group student create a graphic organizer that highlight why specific countries attempted to expand their empires. This graphic organizer will also have on it the consequences of doing so in certain areas. Additionally the group will move toward the front of the class and present their findings
Lesson Closure
Once all student groups have completed their presentation students will be handed a note card where they must write down three things they learned, two questions they still have and one comment for the teacher. These will be collected at the end of the period.
